What are multivitamins?

Multivitamins are supplements designed to deliver a combination of vitamins, minerals and other beneficial ingredients. They act as an additional dietary source of nutrients that you may not be getting in your diet. They’re often available in the form of tablets, capsules, pastilles, powders, or liquids.

Benefits of a multivitamin

The best way to get all the essential nutrients you need is through a varied and balanced diet; however, multivitamins can provide a convenient alternative. They’re particularly useful for times when life gets busy, when you’re suffering from a specific deficiency or if you’re under additional stresses and pressures.

What common vitamins do they contain?

The content of multivitamins can vary from product to product, but most contain all thirteen essential vitamins:

  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin D
  • Vitamin E
  • Vitamin K
  • B Vitamins - B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6, B7 (biotin), B9 (folate), and B12

These are often combined with minerals like calcium, folate and magnesium. Some also feature plant or vegetable extracts such as broccoli, green tea, beetroot or spirulina.

The different types of multivitamins

Types of multivitamins

Multivitamins come in a range of different types:

Multivitamin tablets – Multivitamin tablets are usually cheap to produce but don’t always dissolve consistently which can affect the overall absorption.

Multivitamin capsules – Capsules provide a shell to hold the contents in powder or liquid form. Once the shell is digested, the contents spill out and can be absorbed into your bloodstream.

Chewable multivitamin – These can either be chewable tablets or fruit flavoured gummies. With both, the act of chewing the multivitamin allows the active ingredients to be released into your saliva, ensuring complete absorption in your digestive system.

Vitamins for teens – Vitamins designed for teens usually contain ingredients that can support growth and development. They usually contain large amounts of the vitamins and minerals necessary for healthy bones, optimal immune function and those that support the conversion of food to energy.

Multivitamin with minerals – Despite their name, most multivitamins also come with a selection of minerals. This is because minerals are also a necessary component of a healthy diet and mineral deficiencies are still relatively common in the UK. However, if you are deficient in a specific mineral or want to avoid certain ingredients, you may be able to find more specifically designed options. For example, a multivitamin with zinc or a multivitamin without iron.

Multivitamin with vitamin D - Most multivitamins will contain vitamin D; however, standard formulations may have less than the recommended daily amount. As a result, some people may look for a product specifically labelled as a multivitamin with vitamin D to ensure that they get a larger serving.

Multivitamins for men

Men and women have slightly different nutritional requirements. The NHS suggests that men aged between 19 and 65 require higher levels of vitamins and minerals than women. The most notable exception is iron with an RDA of 8.7mg for men and 14.8mg for women. Additionally, some multivitamins for men may include additional ingredients to support testosterone production and fertility.

Multivitamins for women

According to NHS nutritional guidelines, women require slightly less of most vitamins and minerals. However, menstruation, pregnancy, breastfeeding and menopause create additional dietary requirements. As a result, most multivitamins for women are designed to meet those needs; this often includes higher levels of iron, folate and calcium.

What makes a good quality multivitamin?

ingredients sourced from food

To ensure that you’re getting the best quality multivitamin, there are several things you can look out for:

Optimum absorption – Some vitamins and minerals are easier to absorb than others. Look out for products that have been formulated for easy absorption; this could include chelated minerals or natural multivitamins that contain ingredients sourced from food.

Matches your needs – Everyone’s nutritional needs vary depending on numerous factors, including their age, sex and body chemistry. A multivitamin will provide better results if you take the time to find one that meets your body’s requirements or is designed to support your lifestyle.

Vitamins without fillers or additives - Some companies use extra ingredients to add shape, texture, bulk, colour or flavour to their supplements. The best products to look out for are those that have been labelled as ‘without artificial fillers or additives’. These only include the active ingredients and necessary additions such as a capsule shell and natural fillers like rice flour.

Precautions

  • Multivitamins should be kept out of reach of children.
  • Multivitamins must be kept away from sunlight, excessive heat and humidity.
  • If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, consult with your doctor before taking any supplements.
  • If you have any allergies, it’s essential that you check the label thoroughly before taking any multivitamins.
  • Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied diet or healthy lifestyle.
  • Do not exceed the recommended daily serving suggestion.
