What are mushroom supplements?

Mushroom supplements contain concentrated forms of certain medicinal mushrooms and are primarily available as capsules and powders. Medicinal mushrooms have been used for thousands of years in traditional medical practices such as the ancient Indian medicinal system, Ayurveda, and Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). They contain many different compounds that can be beneficial to health and many people find that they benefit from taking medicinal mushrooms in a simple daily supplement.

Benefits of mushroom supplements

For generations, our ancient ancestors used medicinal mushrooms to “heal and balance” the body and mind as well as to improve longevity, stamina, and vigour. More recently, scientific studies suggest that they were onto something, as research has found that mushroom supplements have benefits for the health of our gut and immune system and can support our overall mental and physical wellbeing. They have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and some are also thought to have adaptogenic qualities, meaning that they can help the body restore harmony and balance during times of stress.

What mushrooms do they contain?

Mushroom supplements vary from product to product and brand to brand. However, there are six ancient mushrooms that are most commonly found in supplements:

  • Lion’s mane
  • Turkey tail
  • Reishi
  • Cordyceps
  • Chaga
  • Maitake

Some supplements contain one type of mushroom, whilst others may contain a combination. Other supplements contain mushrooms along with other ingredients such as collagen-boosting bone broth.

The different types of mushroom supplements

Mushroom supplements are available in various forms:

Preparing mushroomsSingle mushroom capsules – capsules are made of a shell (either from animal-derived gelatine or vegan-friendly cellulose) that is designed to contain the powdered, concentrated mushrooms inside until they’re swallowed. Once inside the gut, the contents are released as the shell is digested, delivering the nutrients directly to the bloodstream.

Multiple mushroom capsules – in the same way as single mushroom capsules, multiple mushroom capsules have their ingredients encapsulated in a dissolvable shell that releases the nutrients into the bloodstream when they reach the gut.

Single and multiple mushroom powders – medicinal mushrooms are harvested, dried and dehydrated to turn them into powders that are easy to digest. These powders can then be turned into capsules, or they can be left as a powder to be added to water and other drinks.

Single and multiple mushroom powders with added nutrients – medicinal mushroom powders can also be added to other formulas, such as collagen-boosting bone broths that are designed to be made into a warming drink.

What makes a good quality mushroom supplement?

To ensure that you’re getting the best quality mushroom supplement, there are several things you can look out for:

Tree mushrooms in natureHigh-quality ingredients – Some types of mushroom supplements contain poor-quality ingredients that don’t have the same level of benefits as high-quality brands. Look for brands that are certified organic and that contain the mycelium of the mushroom (the underground network of fungal threads) along with the fruiting body (the part that’s visible above ground) to contain the maximum level of nutrients.

Matches your needs – Everyone’s nutritional needs vary depending on numerous factors, including their age, sex, and body chemistry. A mushroom supplement will provide better results if you take the time to find one that meets your body’s requirements or is designed to support your lifestyle. Your requirements and needs may change over time, so this is something to keep in mind too, rather than simply taking the same supplement for many years.

Supplements without fillers or additives - Some companies use extra ingredients to add shape, texture, bulk, colour, or flavour to their supplements. The best products to look out for are those that have been labelled as “without artificial fillers or additives”. These only include the active ingredients and necessary additions such as a capsule shell and natural fillers like rice flour.

Precautions

  • Mushroom supplements should be kept out of reach of children.
  • Supplements must be kept away from sunlight, excessive heat and humidity.
  • If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, consult with your doctor before taking any supplements.
  • If you have any allergies, it's essential that you check the label thoroughly before use.
  • Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied diet or healthy lifestyle.
  • Do not exceed the recommended daily serving suggestion.
