Skincare supplements – what are they and what are they used for?

Skincare isn’t just creams and lotions you put on your skin, it can also be supplements formulated to improve the health and appearance of your skin from the inside. These supplements can enhance the effect of topically applied products by addressing any underlying nutritional issues that may be affecting your skin health.

Natural skincare collection

The packs that we’ve chosen include a comprehensive blend of vitamins, minerals and other active ingredients. They each contain a range of substances that are essential to the body processes that replenish cells and keep your skin in optimal health. For example, skincare supplements will likely include:

  • B vitamins – This family of vitamins is often taken as part of skincare or anti-ageing supplement routines. It’s used for dry, irritated skin and to return balance to oily areas.
  • Vitamin A – This is taken to moisturise skin from the inside out and to keep the outer layers healthy.
  • Vitamins C and E – These are both favourites of people looking to prevent the signs of ageing caused by prolonged sun exposure.
  • Hyaluronic acid – This is included because it’s a natural component of your skin that keeps the tissues moist.
  • Zinc, copper and selenium – These minerals are often used to protect against damage from UV radiation.
  • Pine bark extract – This is taken to reduce redness, roughness and other signs of ageing.
  • Collagen – Collagen Is used to strengthen skin and improve its elasticity.

Vegan skincare

Vegan skincare products do not contain any animal parts or by-products and are not tested on animals. It’s harder to find well-made vegan skincare than you’d expect because animal products have been used in creams and lotions for centuries. Although the best vegan products are well labelled, like those we’ve chosen, there are some animal-based products that you need to look out for:

Vegan skincare

Beeswax – Sometimes bee products slip under the radar, but they’re classed as animal by-products and aren’t vegan. Usually used as a carrier substance because of its firm texture, beeswax is a useful ingredient but can easily be swapped for a plant-based alternative. Instead of beeswax, some brands use plant waxes like the carnauba wax found in some of Alteya Organics’ eye creams. It comes from the leaves of a Brazillian palm called Copernicia Cerifera.

Honey – Another bee product, honey, is sometimes used on oily skin and adds a sweet fragrance.  Maple syrup or molasses is often used instead of honey in vegan skincare.

Collagen – This is usually taken from animal or fish skin, bones and cartilage. It is possible to produce vegan collagen using genetically altered yeast, but a more common option is to include substances like vitamin C, zinc and copper to support your body to make its own collagen.

Lanolin – Is harvested from sheep and is excellent at locking moisture into balms or creams. Wonderfully, shea butter that can be found in many of the creams here makes an excellent vegan alternative.

What makes a good quality skincare product?

Good quality skincare

Before you swallow any supplements or apply any creams, you must know that you’re buying good quality products. Poorly made skincare may not work and could irritate or damage your skin. To ensure you only buy the best, you can check:

The expiration date – Only accept products that are in date and haven’t been sitting in a warehouse for years.

Free from parabens, formaldehyde and sulfates – These are all ingredients that should be avoided. They may cause irritation or even affect your hormone levels.

Free from unverified claims – UK and EU brands should not be making claims about their products or ingredients that seem unlikely or can’t be reasonably backed up with evidence. In most cases, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Look for reviews, lab tests or awards that verify any impressive claims such as “completely removes wrinkles in five days”.

That it suits your skin type – For a skin product to work, it needs to be appropriate to your skin. If you know your skin type, you're more likely to be able to find a product that matches your needs and gives you results. The three main skin types are:

  1. Sensitive skin
  2. Dry skin
  3. Oily skin
Couple in sun

What active ingredients it contains – There are numerous excellent skincare ingredients available, but some of the best include:

  • CollagenCollagen is a protein used in your skin to provide strength and elasticity.
  • Essential oils – Essential oils are often found in skincare because of their range of useful properties and intense natural aromas. They’re usually included only in tiny measures because in higher concentrations, they can be harmful to your skin.
  • Rose otto – This is the essential oil made from the Bulgarian Damascena rose. Often used to soothe itchy skin, it takes 3,000kg of petals to make 1kg of oil.
  • Shea butter – Produced from the nuts of the karite tree, shea butter is packed full of beneficial vitamins and fatty acids.
  • BEC5 – This eggplant extract is applied to lesions and badly damaged skin.
  • Sweet almond oil – Often used on dry skin, sweet almond oil contains a blend of vitamin A, vitamin E, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids.

Precautions

  • Skincare, supplements and cosmetics should be kept out of reach of children.
  • Keep them away from sunlight, excessive heat and humidity.
  • Food supplements (for skin care) should not be used as a substitute for a varied diet or healthy lifestyle.
  • Do not exceed the recommended daily serving suggestion or application amount.
  • Read the label and follow the directions carefully.
  • Wash your hands before and after you apply any topical products.
