Are you interested in how to stay healthy using CBD oil as a food supplement? This article looks at the benefits of CBD oil and how it supports a healthy lifestyle. If you’re looking into healthy lifestyle choices to improve your wellbeing and the way you live, CBD oil can be a useful food supplement. This article looks at the benefits of CBD oil and how it can go hand in hand with a healthy lifestyle. We discuss how the endocannabinoid system is the backbone for understanding the importance of Roger Adams’s breakthrough discovery. The endocannabinoid system is the “why?” behind CBD oil. If you understand how it works, you will understand why CBD oil as a supplement could be added to your shopping list as part of your health regime.
Roger Adams, a scientist at the University of Illinois in the US, studied the chemistry of the marijuana plant for years. In 1940, he separated CBD as a separate chemical compound from the rest of the plant, but, sadly, he did not realise what he found. Instead, Raphael Mechoulam is given widespread credit for the discovery of CBD, but it was actually Roger Adams, alone in his laboratory, that kick-started the CBD revolution we’re witnessing today.Suddenly, cannabidiol oil (CBD oil) is everywhere. The whole image of CBD oil has changed over the last few years. Whereas the general public has little knowledge about the benefits that CBD offers, market research studies show that more and more people are now using CBD oil as a supplement to support their health and greater success in life. (The Role of CBD in an active and healthy lifestyle, 2018).
Hello, ECS what? You might never even have heard about it, but each of us has an endocannabinoid system (ECS) within our bodies. A bit of on the history of marijuana: It was discovered in 1988 that our brains respond to compounds found in cannabis. The DNA sequence of the cannabinoid receptors was mapped out and in 1990, mice were “created” without these receptors. When THC (the habit-forming compound in marijuana) was administrated to these mice, it had no effect, proving that THC will only work together with the cannabinoid receptors. This paved the way for more research. Dr. Lumir Hanus, along with American researcher Dr. William Devane, proceeded to isolate specific endocannabinoids and the receptors that interact with them. (Moore, 2018)What they discovered, explained simply, is that there is an assortment of “new” cell receptors and the molecules that “communicate” with them that was never before recognized. In the end, more than 100 different chemicals in cannabis (called cannabinoids) were isolated.
It is important to know that you can’t get high on CBD oil! The THC compound (that is the psychoactive substance in marijuana) makes out just 0.3% in the average CBD oil (Oster, 2017). According to the NIDA in America, habit-forming marijuana can contain 50% -80% of THC. (NIDA, 2018, June 25). In fact, in the UK, CBD oil is a legal food supplement as long as it contains less than 0.2% of THC.
On the surface of cells, these cell receptors act as small puzzle pieces waiting for their matching chemical molecule-mates. Each time the two puzzle pieces fit together, a message is transferred, telling the cell what to do. The endocannabinoid cells and their molecules can be found throughout the body – in the brain, organs, glands and even the immune cells. The ECS system is not a physical system such as the blood system, but rather a delicate balance that is run by “foot soldiers” of cell interaction on a daily basis.
No one can deny it: we need optimum performance from our cells to live healthy lives. For this to happen, conditions need to be just right within our bodies. We can’t be too hot or too cold, or our blood sugar too high or too low. We can’t be too happy or too sad, or experience too little (in certain circumstances!) or too much pain. The endocannabinoid system regulates all of these systems to help our bodies cope. The message that is transferred between the cell and the molecules is about “homeostasis” – or maintaining conditions so that it is just right within cells (Jikomes, 2016). The ECS system is, therefore, doing a balancing act – the whole time of keeping all of these systems in sync. It is its ultimate goal. The ECS regulates many bodily functions such as digestion, mood, motor control, pain, memory and temperature regulation.
Here is an example: Jo-Anne has a bacterial infection. Immune cells detect that something is not right, and they fire off molecules that alert other immune cells that they must come and help. Endocannabinoids are also released. What do they do? They also signal immune cells and give them the message that an intruder (the inflammation) must be dealt with. The endocannabinoid system works together with the immune cells so that excessive inflammation is prevented and so that the body can return to its normal state (Jikomes, 2016).
There is also support for the fact that the ECS can alter human behaviour – it can make you more creative and prone to share your good humour. Why is this? The ECS assists in the growth of new brain cells and the forming of connections between them. The system can, therefore, influence how you think and also help reformat old thinking patterns. This whole process is an essential part of being healthy. (Jikomes, 2016)Trials have shown that taking CBD as a supplement on a daily basis can greatly assist the working of your ECS system.
Enter another important role-player: Enzymes. They are the “vacuum cleaners” of the body. They go around and clean up if there are any leftover endocannabinoids that haven’t found a receptor to slot in with. This is not good! It is a waste to get rid of the good endocannabinoids that can still play a role in maintaining balance in your body. Cannabis can stop enzymes from breaking down leftover endocannabinoids and it, therefore, makes more of it available for your cells to use. (Sulak, 2015)
The discovery of the ECS system is what makes CBD oil such a big deal, because so many of our bodily functions are regulated by the ECS and the effect that endocannabinoids have in our bodies. (Jikomes, 2016)
Success to be foundAccording to a market research study with a sample population of 2,000 respondents, the regular user of CBD oil has a higher household income, is better educated and has a higher full-time employment rate, suggesting a balanced and successful lifestyle. (The Role of CBD in an active and healthy lifestyle, 2018)
As food supplement suppliers, we are required by law not to discuss the medical benefits of CBD oil or give advice on illnesses, because we retail the product as a supplement. Your doctor will be the best person to talk to if you have any concerns in this regard. But, studies have shown that CBD oil as a food supplement can help you, in general, to support your complete wellbeing. Use it as you would any other food supplement: to complement a healthy lifestyle.
Have another apple.Did you know that in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle, you should eat 5-9 portions of fruit and vegetables per day? Fruit and vegetables are high in vitamins and minerals, as well as in fibre. At every meal, vegetables should fill up half of your plate. (Heckenliable, 2018)Do you find that hard? You’re not alone. It is very difficult for most people to eat that many vegetables and fruit every day. This is why CBD oil as a food supplement can help to maintain your healthy lifestyle. Most people skip breakfast in the mad rush to get out the door in the mornings. Lunch at work is often a rushed takeaway meal somewhere and when you get at home in the evening hearty meal – cooking is the last thing on your mind. You want fast and you want easy so that you can finish up the evening chores and go to bed.
A CBD oil supplement, together with some vitamins and minerals can “cancel out” some of those much-needed veggies on your plate but still, provide you with the necessary supplements that you need in your body. The end result will be a much more balanced lifestyle. All of us have felt unbalanced or just “off” when we’re ill or when we make bad lifestyle choices. CBD oil is a wonderful supplement to help restore that balance in your body. CBD oil brings more stability to your ECS system and helps it to restore balance when you are ill or when you unthinkingly make bad lifestyle choices. Start with a low dose of CBD oil. Most people benefit from starting low and gradually increasing their intake. The maximum dose of CBD oil you can take is 200mg, but most people benefit from much lower doses. As CBD oil is completely safe, you can experiment with which dose feels the most beneficial to you. Use it the same way as you would any other vitamin or food supplement.
A healthy lifestyle of watching your diet, regular exercise, getting enough rest and cutting out too much alcohol and sugar is beneficial - for everyone. CBD oil is not a medicine, but a supplement that is relatively cheap, safe and natural. A more balanced life and a healthy lifestyle are within reach if you understand the benefits of CBD oil. It has been proven: Lifestyle changes come with small steps. Have a quick read of the CBD oil guide to get started. Let the use of CBD oil be one of your first steps in the right direction to live a balanced, healthy life. To your health,
