What is collagen

Collagen is an abundant structural protein made from long chains of amino acids. It’s present in your skin, bones, muscles and connecting tissues where it provides strength and elasticity.

What is hydrolysed collagen?

Hydrolysed collagen has been treated with enzymes to break its long amino acid chains into small sections called peptides. This helps it pass through your gut wall and means that the amino acids are ready for your body to use without a lengthy digestion process.

Why should I use a collagen supplement?

Collagen supplements provide a dietary source of amino acids in the form of collagen proteins or peptides. Once digested and absorbed into your bloodstream, the amino acids can be used to build new collagen proteins or repair old ones.

Is collagen actually good for you?

Yes, collagen is good for you; some studies suggest that having an abundant supply of amino acids may combat the collagen loss that comes with ageing. Specifically, it may boost collagen levels in the skin, improve skin hydration and even reduce wrinkle volume by 20%. Research has also shown that it may also reduce stiffness and pain for those who suffer from some forms of osteoarthritis.

Is taking collagen supplements safe?

Collagen supplements are considered generally safe for most people; however, some have reported mild side effects, including a bad taste in their mouth, stomach discomfort or diarrhoea.

As with any food supplement, the manufacturing processes and ingredients can vary from brand to brand. Some may contain allergens; marine-sourced powders will contain fish or shellfish.

Which collagens types are best?

Collagen supplements collection

The best collagens are marine-sourced from fish or shellfish and bovine-sourced from cattle:

  • Marine collagen is highly regarded because it is fast to absorb and predominantly contains type I collagen, which supports skin, muscle, bone, and eye health.
  • Bovine collagen has type I collagen but also contains type III.

Collagen types I, II and III are the best because they’re the most abundant and can provide the broadest range of benefits. Type I and III both provide strength and elasticity to your skin, ligaments, and bones. Type II is found in animal/fish cartilage and connective tissue. Most standard bovine or marine products aren't made with cartilage but those specifically aimed at joint health are. This will be made clear on the product label.

Some products also include boosters to aid collagen production. The most well-known of these is vitamin C.

Types of collagen products

Collagen products types

The most common types of collagen products are capsules, powder, and drinks:

  • Collagen capsules contain a precisely measured amount and are ideal if you want something that can be taken discreetly with water.
  • The powder is quick to absorb and can be added to most foods or drinks, making it exceptionally versatile. Here is a selection of the best collagen powders we've found in the UK.
  • Collagen drinks come in a bottle or pre-measured sachet. Because they require no preparation, they’re ideal for use on the go.
  • Collagen tea is a blend of powdered peptides with tea, herbs or other superfoods. It makes a tasty infusion with added amino acids.

You can also buy vegan collagen, produced using recombinant microorganisms, or as a blend of nutrients that are essential to collagen production.

How to use collagen

How to use collagen

A daily measure of between 2.5g to 15g of collagen peptides has been found to be safe and effective. However, up to 5g is sufficient for most uses, including to support skin and joint health.

  • Powders can be measured out with a scoop or spoon. They can be added to a smoothie or mixed into water or juice. A ratio of 5g of collagen to at least 200ml of liquid is commonly used.
  • Capsules can be swallowed with water or juice; some brands suggest one to two capsules per day, depending on their strength.
  • Collagen drinks can be sipped as they are, or you could swallow the contents of a sachet in one.

Precautions

  • Collagen products should be kept out of reach of children.
  • Collagen must be kept away from sunlight, excessive heat and humidity.
  • If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, consult with your doctor before using collagen.
  • If you’re allergic to fish, marine collagen should be avoided.
  • Do not exceed the recommended daily serving suggestion.
  • Collagen is a protein; ensure you follow a diet that contains sufficient protein for your constitution and lifestyle.
